Small fish. Big pond. Huge dreams.
The L.A. Complex focuses on a select group of aspiring performers pursuing celluloid and stardom in LA. Moving into an apartment-style motel for displaced dreamers, each dubbed "most likely to succeed", they all face the challenges and opportunities of a lifetime.
For every bona fide starlet, there are countless cocktail waitresses. For every true rock star, there are hundreds of buskers on the pier. For every comedian with a hit sitcom, there are dozens of guys cracking jokes while pouring your coffee. In LA your life can change in the blink of an eye. On Monday, you might score some face-time with the big-shot producer. On Tuesday, you might drink the night away, just to cope with the loneliness. On Wednesday, you might sign that multi-million dollar contract. On Thursday, you might try to sleep your way to the top, only to end up in the gutter. But one thing is for sure - on Friday, the rent is due.
An actress who had some success when she was younger, but now that she is no longer the young ingenue, Raquel finds herself struggling to find acting work. Street-smart and sharp with a hint of edge, she is a seasoned vet of the L.A. scene, capable of doing anything to get what she wants and always working an angle. She has come a long way from her days in Halifax. Funny, fiery, strong and sexy - she's part actress, part con-woman.
Vancouver native Jewel Staite joins the cast of THE L.A. COMPLEX as Raquel, the street-smart veteran of the Hollywood scene. Jewel began studying at the Vancouver Youth Theatre at the age of six. In 1996, Jewel landed the lead role in the Disney Channel series FLASH FORWARD. Her performance earned her a Gemini Award nomination for 'Best Performance in a Children's or Youth Program or Series,' as well as a nomination for the Canadian Television Film and Showcase Award. In addition, Jewel was a series regular alongside Nathan Fillion in Joss Whedon's FOX science-fiction television series FIREFLY. This led to her starring in Serenity, the feature film adaptation that Universal Pictures released in 2005.
From 2007-2009 Jewel played Dr. Keller in the SyFy Channel hit series STARGATE: ATLANTIS. In 2008, Jewel received a Gemini Award nomination for 'Best Performance by an Actress in a Continuing Leading Dramatic Role' and in 2009, Jewel received a Leo Award nomination for 'Best Lead Performance by a Female in a Dramatic Series.' Both nominations were for her work on STARGATE: ATLANTIS.
Other TV series appearances include FOX Family's HIGHER GROUND with Hayden Christensen, a recurring role on the highly praised FOX series WONDERFALLS, NBC's JUST DEAL and Nickelodeon's SPACE CASES. Her television film credits include starring roles in Lifetime's Widow on the Hill opposite James Brolin, Showtime's Damaged Care opposite Laura Dern and SyFy's Mothman and Doomsday Prophecy. Jewel also made guest appearances in the CW's SUPERNATURAL, Showtime's HUFF with Hank Azaria, Syfy's WAREHOUSE 13, Showtime's DEAD LIKE ME and FOX's THE X-FILES.
Most recently, Jewel starred in the Hallmark Channel film Call Me Mrs. Miracle opposite Doris Roberts. This premiere was one of the highest rated Hallmark Channel telecasts of 2010.
