Cool, confident and charismatic - Matte dropped an infectious urban flava Much couldn’t resist. This Torontonian simply showed up at MuchMusic World Headquarters in 2004 and convinced the station’s top dogs he was VJ-worthy. In the days that followed, Matte continued to impress over a series of gruelling on-camera tests. Upbeat and always ready to roll, it’s clear this Libra (born October 13th) has got his Much groove on. Mariah Carey, Coldplay, P. Diddy, P!nk and James Blunt are just a few of the superstars Matte has chatted up on the channel. And thanks to his on-camera charisma, Matte was named one of Toronto’s most eligible bachelors by the National Post in 2006.
ONE PASSION ABOVE ALL
A fashion-conscious guy who incorporates the latest trends into his own distinctive look, Matte feels clothing and music can be compared. “You get a new shirt and you wear it constantly for a while, until you find a new one. But when there’s a special occasion, you always have a couple of go-to jerseys. I think of my all-time favourite albums the same way.” Matte’s got many music-triggered memories. “Tunes from Paul Simon’s Graceland album remind me of road trips with my dad. Nas’s Illmatic gets me thinking about best friends. And my first love jumps to mind when I crank H-Town’s Knockin’ Da Boots.” Music’s not the only thing raising his heart rate – sports do too. He ably tears it up on the basketball court and he’s even played semi-pro football in Austria. But above all, Matte puts family first. “They constantly inspire me and provide a safety net through tough times. Without family, there’s little else.”
RIGHT NOW, MATTE WANTS PEOPLE TO KNOW…
…he’s down-to-earth and values originality in people. Concerned about the future of Canada’s youth, his advice to them is, simply, “Just be you.”
SHOES MAKE THE MAN
“If your sneaker game’s on point, you’re good,” proclaims this running-shoe addict who figures he owns between 70 and 80 pairs, including some prized rarities.

5. City Switches: Matte’s lived in New York City, Atlanta, Scarborough, Milton and Hamilton; he’s now a downtown Toronto dweller.

2. Majors: Matte graduated with a double honours degree in communications and sociology from Waterloo’s Wilfrid Laurier University. If he wasn’t a VJ, Matte claims he’d be a “career student” instead.
