HELLCATS

Meet Marti, an indie rocker chick with an attitude. Marti is smart, resourceful and studying law at Memphis' Lancer University -- known for its academia and athletics -- with the hopes of going on to a law career, hopefully somewhere outside the South. Studying aside, she spends most of her days observing from the edge, mothering her mom, Wanda, and hanging out with her best bud, Dan, with whom she jeers at anything that smells of team sports. But when Marti's funding for law school is lost, the only chance she has to stay in school is to try and to win a scholarship awarded to members of the Hellcats, the school's competitive cheerleading squad -- which is pretty much the last thing Marti wants to do.

The Hellcats have a tradition of being one of the nation's top squads, but times have been tough and, as they struggle to regain their former glory, they know that they must place at the upcoming qualifiers or their competitive cheer days will be over. Savannah, the captain of the Hellcats, is a Southern belle with an unparalleled passion for competitive cheerleading. Lewis is a former football player and wrestler who prefers the high-profile life of a being cheerleader without all the physical abuse (and being around all those girls isn't so bad either). So when assistant captain Alice gets hurt and the Hellcats find themselves in desperate need of a flyer -- someone with athletic agility who can be tossed through the air with ease -- the squad needs a new member fast. With her background and natural ability in gymnastics, Marti could be a perfect fit. Coached by Vanessa, who took the Hellcats to national acclaim 10 years earlier, the Hellcats could have a shot. But will Marti be able to keep her attitude in check to help the Hellcats place at the qualifiers? Will her mother once again cause Marti the anxiety that derailed her former life as a gymnast? Will Marti and Savannah, complete opposites and now roommates, realize that they could learn something from each other? With a stellar ensemble cast and a little fancy footwork, HELLCATS, inspired by the book Cheer! Inside the Secret World of College Cheerleaders by Kate Torgovnick, is an upbeat and fast-paced dramedy that will make you cheer.
