(Has) Video Killed the Video Star?

Hollywood experienced an upheaval in the early 1930s when sound movies arrived. Many actors lost their jobs because their voices or accents were inappropriate to the expectations of the viewing audiences; they looked and acted fine, but they spoke strangely.

Has the opposite occurred in the music business? Have successful recording artists lost their jobs because they couldn’t act appropriately for music videos? Have some mediocre artists maintained a following because they come across well in their videos? Have video directors become more important than the musicians? If they have, Has Video Killed the Video Star?

1. Lars Ulrich (Metallica) states that listeners have lost their power to imagine as a result of the music video. He suggests that listeners imagine scenes that might occur as they listen, but that the imaging done by video directors has replaced the personal images, so listeners simply remember the video images. He believes this has weakened the power and participation of the listener.

Do you imagine images when you listen to music? Is that an important part of the enjoyment? Do you remember music video images when you listen to some music? Does that increase or decrease your enjoyment? Can you suggest a music video that ruined your enjoyment of the song? Why did that happen?

2. A recording company executive suggests that artists and videos lose their uniqueness with overexposure. With the proliferation of music channels, is the repeated screening of videos shortening the popularity of videos and musicians? Do they get played out faster? Can you suggest some examples of artists or videos that were exciting when they premiered, but quickly lost their interest through overexposure? How many times can someone see a music video before it becomes an unpleasant experience? Why?

Have video directors become more important than the musicians? Consider the directors that are named in the video, and list the videos they have directed. What are the consistent qualities in their videos? Are they more important than the musicians?

Award-winning TV commercials are now collected and shown in movie theatres. Might that happen soon with music video? Would that mean that the directors were more important than the musicians, and that "Video Killed the Video Star?"

Visit a music video site such as musicvideo.com  Are the videos organized by artist, or by director? Is the viewing experience as good as it is on MuchMusic? Why? How else is the experience different? Are the videos as fresh? Can you imagine people preferring to watch videos on the Internet rather than MuchMusic? Why? Should MuchMusic build a website of music videos? Why?

February 4, 2009 – Womaging

Explores the issue of body image, combining feedback from an expert in the field of body image with discussion by influential female artists including former Spice Girl Geri Halliwell and TLC.

February 24, 2009 – By Their Own Hand

"By Their Own Hand" examines the interrelation of creativity, depression and suicide. The program looks at a variety of music videos that address the subject of suicide, and interviews therapists, artists and critics to understand the connection between music, art, mood disorders and suicide.

March 4, 2009 - Much Talks: Too Hot or Not

Where do we draw the line when it comes to sexuality in music videos?  When does an image change from sexy to sexist?  MuchMusic examines this question with a live audience, panelists including video director Little X, and commentary from such sexy video stalwarts as Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears, and Madonna.

March 11, 2009 – Much Talks Body Image

Join MuchMusic for an in-depth look at body image and today's teens.  From plastic surgery and eating disorders to media images and self-esteem, MuchMusic looks at society's obsession with body image.

March 18, 2009 – Hip Hop Consciousness

Hip hop artists discuss their efforts to effect positive change in their community, and comment on the materialism prevalent in mainstream hip hop.  Controversial artists like Eminem and Dead Prez contribute to the debate.

March 25, 2009 - MuchTalks Climate Change
