All About Zach

Nothin' like a good east-coaster to get the party started, b'y. Zach's coming to ya from St. John's Newfoundland, with a spark-plug personality and some radio experience under its belt. Ok, so it's not on air, but you won't even notice when you see him hit the screen! He likes Wolf Parade and Nirvana, and wants to know where The Killers get their suits! Check out Zach's audition tape and his Q&A now.

  • Why should you be a Much VJ?:
  • Because NO ONE could do it like I can do it. Because no one knows more, or is more passionate about music, broadcasting, and Canadian culture.
  • Formal education completed:
  • Audio Engineering Degree from Recording Arts Canada
  • Languages spoken:
  • English, French
  • Last job(s) held:
  • Studio Director at CBC Radio, St. John's, Newfoundland.
  • Describe your personality and style:
  • My style is much more subtle than my personality, which is bright and engaging. My style is a little eclectic, blingin' here, ragged there.
  • What are your strengths?:
  • I am an excellent communicator, born to speak in public. I am confident, outgoing, and funny without being cocky or arrogant.
  • What was the best concert you've ever attended and why?:
  • Hawksley Workman, on drums and backed up by a pianist and guitarist at Club One on George Street. Intimate as could be.
  • What are your two favourite CDs, and what's the most recent you've listened to?:
  • My two faves are "Rumours" by Fleetwood Mac and "Nevermind" by Nirvana. Most recent is "Apologies To The Queen Mary" by Wolf Parade.
  • Name three books that have influenced you:
  • 1984 by George Orwell, Trainspotting by Irvine Welsh, Shake Hands With The Devil by Roméo Dallaire.
  • What magazines do you read?:
  • Spin, Adbusters, Harpers, the Walrus, Rolling Stone, Macleans, New Yorker, Vanity Fair.
  • What are your goals?:
  • First and foremost, to win the MuchMusic VJ Search contest. After that... um...to live my life with honesty and kindness to others, to make a difference where I can, to regret nothing.
  • What three artists would you most like to interview?:
  • At this moment, I would most like to interview Kanye West, The White Stripes, and Classified.
  • If you had the opportunity what one question would you ask...
  • 50 CENT: If you had the chance to do it all over, would you do anything different?
AVRIL LAVIGNE: How does it feel when you see gangs of young girls dressed just like you?
THE KILLERS: Where do you get those suits?
COLDPLAY: While no one was looking, you became the biggest band in the world. Where can you go from here?
  • What social issues interest you?:
  • Global inequality. African AIDS and poverty epidemics, privitization of resources and culture, racial and gender equality, ending ignorance and apathy.
  • Who, in your opinion, are the most influential artists in music history?:
  • Bob Dylan, The Beatles and Elvis are in a class by themselves. After that, you've got the Stones, Hendrix, The Doors, Public Enemy, Madonna, The Boss, NWA, Nirvana and Eminem.
  • What does MuchMusic mean to you?:
  • MuchMusic has always been a hub for Canadian youth culture, which is incredibly important to me. Much has an influence among Canadian youth unmatched by any other institution.
  • What are your favourite shows on Much?:
  • My favourite Much shows are Going Costal and the Wedge, and always have been. I almost cried when I heard that Nick and Jessica split (no more Newlyweds! SOB!!!)
