Your Vote Matters

You've got power because politicians listen to numbers!

Believe it: if you're between 18 and 34, you make up a huge chunk of this country. More than 7 million Canadians (or 23% of the total population) are in this age group. That's a whole lot of power!

Here's another number: $100 billion dollars.
That's how much Canadians 18-34 spend each year. Money talks. And politicians listen, because youth have the power and the magic of numbers.

Did you know? The since 2000 when barely 25% of young voters 18-24 in Canada voted the last two election cycles have actually seen increases in youth participation: 37% in 2004 and 44% in 2008. For those 25-34, the turnout was 50% in the last election.

Compare that with the voting turnout of those over 34:

  • 62% of 35-44 year olds
  • 70% of those 45-54
  • nearly 75% of those over 55!

See for yourself here (page 24).

Politicians are ignoring us and listening to our parents and grandparents because they are more likely to vote than youth. What's up with that? Let's show them that we mean something to this country!

One vote is your vote. Stand up and be counted.

Great ideas equals a great country

Make the politicos deal with issues that stoke you. Challenge them on their record, their promises and their vision of Canada. Start shouting. You'll be heard.

You want one more reason?

The world is watching

Use it or lose it. Millions and millions of people around the world can't vote ‘cause their governments won't let them.

So if you won't vote for you, vote to show your support for youth around the world who aren't allowed to vote. Or do it for those who've moved mountains for the right to vote (former Yugoslavia, South Africa). Or for those still fighting for that right (China, Sudan).

Let'em know that democracy is worth caring about and fighting for.

The government affects your life!

A survey was conducted with young Canadians on issues that are important to them. This is not a statement by Youthography or MuchMusic, just a reflection of your opinions.

Top Issues For Canadian Youth

  • The Environment - If protecting Canada's environment is important to you, as it is to a large number of Canadians, then look for the party that best act to sustain all of our beautiful ecosystems.

  • Education - The government has raised tuition by 138% over the past ten years and too many people are falling through the cracks because of a lack of education funding. This is the issue we are hit hardest by – one that is not important to anyone else. If we don't speak up for education it will never be a priority.

  • The Economy - Are you looking for policies that support businesses to generate jobs? Or are you looking for policies that create new employment sectors? How will you benefit and who will get you what you need to succeed? How you feel about these issues will affect your vote.

  • Accountability/Ethics - Whether it was $1-million or $100-million, what's important is that you feel you can trust the people in charge of your money. Don't vote for promises, vote for delivery! Vote for someone who you can put faith in to be responsible and honest to this country.

  • Taxes - When you shop you expect to get your moneys worth, shouldn't you expect the same when you give your money to our government? Where will your money be spent? Vote for the people who can put your priorities first.

  • Gay Marriage and Rights - No matter what your stand, it's become clear that the issue of gay marriage and rights cannot be ignored and will be dealt with in the next federal administration. Speak now, or forever hold your peace.

  • Leadership - You're not just voting for a party or set of ideas, but for someone who can represent you. When our Prime Minister meets with other leaders, is that someone you can be proud of?

  • Healthcare - All parties have a different approach to healthcare, so dig into their plans to understand what changes affect you and your future. The way our parents and grandparents voted affected the type of healthcare they have now – today it's our turn to make decisions about the care we get when we need healthcare the most.

  • Afghanistan - Canada's commitment there has been taking its toll back home and on our service personnel.

  • Social Issues - Canada has always had policies to benefit the less fortunate and all political parties have a plan to strengthen our social infrastructure. Vote for the party that shares your ideas and beliefs on social issues for a better standard of living.

These are your issues. If we don't care about them, who will?

Things to think about before you vote:

You're not voting so much for the person as you are for the party

Is the party perfect for you?

What are your issues? Look for the party that represents them best
