![]() Strategic Voting | 01.17.06 If you're talking about politics this election, you're talking about strategic voting. Fashion, food, movies, music - my friends and I can have a lively conversation about all of the above, even if we don't always agree. However, introduce politics into the mix and it can get un petit peu, how do you say? Ugly. That's because we all live in the same riding, where the incumbent beat out the NDP candidate by less than 1000 votes last election. And this is where strategic voting comes in. For some. I personally, don't have any strategy about anything I do. To be honest, I could probably use some more strategy in my life. But the most wonderful part about not having much strategy, is that you can (perhaps, naively?) live by your principles. There's no need to compromise. I will vote according to my values. Others see strategic voting as a way to say, "No thanks." But I'd rather use my vote to say, "Yes, you!" I know I'm oversimplifying, but there it is in a nutshell. It just depends on how strongly you feel, either way. Get in on the debate! Posted by Hannah Sung / MuchMusic Time To Choose... | 01.12.06 It's election time! The best part about this is the idea that so many Canadians will be voting for the very first time. I know that all the stats say that young people don't come out to vote, but I'd rather not think about that right now. I believe that the people who are plugged into pop culture are the very same who are engaged in the world around them. And we vote! When you cast a ballot, it makes you a powerful citizen. So, here's to reading several newspapers a morning online and watching the evening national news every night. I know you're aware of the parties' official websites, so here's a couple more: An interesting initiative: www.thedemocracyproject.ca And a place to go if you want to wear your politics on your sleeve: www.bawdypolitic.ca See you soon, Posted by Hannah Sung / MuchMusic Debate Aftermath | 01.10.06 For those who don’t know, there was a major electoral debate going on in Montréal yesterday between all four parties. If you enjoy stomaching an hour or so of middle aged politicians arguing over the same 4 or 5 topics then this was the show for you. I'm going to be honest, most of these debates can be very dry. We're not talking West Wing drama here. I've always been genuinely fascinated with politics and even I can barely watch for the full time. There is a plus though: one of these four men is going to be essentially running the country, or at least hopefully will have a majority government by election time. For those young voters, or voters who don’t really know the stances of the four candidates it’s a relatively quick Canadian politics cram session. Also, it was interesting to pay attention to not only what these gentlemen were saying, but also, what they weren't saying. What they stood for, what are they not standing for. The goal is to try to match up the credentials that are most important to you and make an informed vote. Devon Posted by Devon Soltendieck / MuchMusic |
