Seriously. What's not to like about Metric? Nothing, that's what. They blew us away with their performance at on MMVA night and deservedly scored the trophy for Best Indie Video. Team Metric! Anyway, we stole the three dudes - James, Joules and Josh (yay for alliteration!) - away after their Saturday rehearsal for a little chat!
You just came from the gift lounge, so what's the best thing you've ever gotten for free?
Josh: Wowwww. I haven't paid for anything, ever.
Jimmy: Free love.
Joules: All you need is love. All you need is free love.
When you write songs like "Hustle Rose" that aren't singles, but are loved and adored by fans, do you feel it? Like, this one is special.
James: No, I think that you have to feel that when you write every song. You're just not sure which is the one that's not gonna relate or not. (looking at the voice recorder) Are you sure that's not a shaver?
It actually acts as a shaver AND a pen.
James: Nice!
So what about singles, is it the same thing?
James: I think singles, when you're writing them, you're kind of thinking the same thing but then once you know that there's a possibility that *that* might be the one you're riding on, then maybe at the end of the recording process and the mix, you might try to do a couple little things different. But we're not really a singles band.
Joules: Yeah, you can kind of tell when you're writing a song. Everybody, well I like A Side tunes, and I like B side tunes. You can tell sometimes which would be more of an A Side and which would be more of a B side.
There's a great picture on your website of the crowd at your set at Coachella, with everybody's hands synchronized in the air. Would that best describe the perfect onstage experience?
James: I think so. That photograph captures what was so amazing about that show.
Josh: Everything was amazing about that show. Everything went wrong, and then because of that, it seems like when we would come back with something right, that's exactly how they responded everytime [like in the photo]. I think we were just as shocked as they were. We'd go down - like EVERYTHING broke in that show. Absolutely everything.
James: Literally both keyboards, the keyboard amps, the big amp - everything we had on stage broke.
Josh: By the end, everyone was so happy that we kept playing and we didn't get messed up in the mind about it.
Do you guys practice your moves in the mirror?
All: (Laughter)
Josh: Hell, no.
Like, never ever?
Josh: No.
James: No.
Joules: Moves that we have on stage? Or night club moves?
James: I try to pick myself up in the mirror. And then if I get turned on, I know it's working.
Last question. What wins, outdoor shows or indoor shows?
Josh: Aw. That's too, that's too - gimme some more.
Joules: What's the weather like?
James: That's like saying, what's better? Chicken fried chicken or chicken fried steak?
