Coupla Questons: Fall Out Boy

Fall Out Boy

Before Fall Out Boy did their MMVA soundcheck, we pulled frontman Patrick Stump aside to ask him a coupla questions about the impending release of their followup album to “From Under The Cork Tree”, high school dances & John Hughes!

We heard that you’re going to be recording your new album this month. Has that already happened?

It’s still currently planned to take place in June. It’s still in the cards. I don’t want to jinx it though so that’s all I’m gonna say.

You guys really helped get the word out about Panic! At The Disco – who’s someone else on your radar that we need to know about?

There’s a lot of bands that I’m into. The Hush Sound and Gym Class Heroes both have records coming out real soon. Other stuff like Jamie Lidell, I really like his record, The Coup, their new record is really awesome. There’s just so much new stuff out there! We’re constantly listening to music on the road.

Can fans expect more of the Fall Out Boy sound that they already love, or something unexpected?

I think it’ll be similar – it’s one of those things where, when you’re in a band you can’t really escape yourself. I think a lot of people try to and act like they’re changing the world with their music. I think ultimately I just want to make a better record than the last one! I don’t wanna make the more mature record, or a more ‘whatever’ record. I don’t have an ulterior motive with it – I just want to make a better record.

We awarded “Dance, Dance” with the Rock Reward of “Best Use Of A High School Gym”.

Nice! Thank you so much! There must have been some stiff competition in that category.

Ha! Where’d you get the inspiration for the video? Was it based on your own homecoming dance experience?

[Lowered voice] Um, I didn’t go to any high school dances. It was one of those things where the night of my prom, we played a Fall Out Boy show so I went to that and I dressed up. The video for “Dance, Dance” very influenced by 80s movies, but specifically the kind of stuff that spoke to the suburbs, John Hughes kinda stuff. I think it’s just drenched in that kind of feeling. I don’t think they make a lot of movies like that anymore so it’s a nice thing to hearken back to – how the underdogs have their prom. There are a lot of prom movies and they make them look like underdogs now, so that’s cool.

“A Little Less Sixteen Candles…” gives us the impression that you guys are big John Hughes fans…

Oh, definitely! We love all those movies, and we literally grew up in that area. If you watch John Hughes movies and you see those stores, those houses and the church in Home Alone, that’s like where we lived. So it’s really easy to relate to for us.

What are your summer plans?

Um, I’ve got this band and we play shows and we write records. So we’re probably gonna do some of that! First and foremost I want to get this album done and released. It’s supposed to be fall 2006 but I’m not going to definitively say. I don’t want to jinx anything!
