Gossified: MMVA Edition

So, 2005 was supposed to be the year of The Black Eyed Peas solo project whirlwind, with each member venturing off to do their own thing. But instead, they decided to keep pushing the momentum of the group. Now we have a spankin' new BEP album and besides, wouldn't you rather have four Peas putting on a show for you at the MMVAs? Like, you can't really be sure if one Pea will be filling enough.

Alexisonfire have got to know that they're hot shiznat, what with their 3 nominations and a performing slot and all. So don't get your panties all in a bunch when you hear about their side projects, k? If you don't know, Wade and George have teamed up with McNab and Ratbeard from Jersey to form The Black Lung, and Dallas has a solo project called City and Colour. So just to rehash: Alexisonfire love each other very much and they still love you too, and they're not getting a divorce.

Billy Talent are on a freaking rampage. Do they ever take time off? These guys have been touring like nonstop forever. They played some Warped Tour shows, then they're moving on to Edgefest, and there's talk of them performing in a Canadian Live 8 show if it happens here. They're recording a new album, they're raising money for charities and they're generally spreading good cheer and even better rock all around. PLUS, they received the most nominations for the MMVAs (9), with double nods in three categories. Jeez, they should just, like change their name to Billy Half-Assed to make the rest of us feel better about ourselves.

Is Ashlee Simpson the next great enemy of Lindsay Lohan? It's been rumoured for a while now that Ash was dating Wilmer Valderrama, who is of course Lindsay's ex. We thought that things might've been ok when there wasn't much evidence of public feuding. But then, Lindsay's MTV Movie Award after party happened. When Ashlee and big sis Jessica tried to join the fun, Linds supposedly was all, "uh uh, they are not coming to this party," and the doorman turned the Simpson sisters away! Isn't this eerily similar to how the Lindsay-Hilary feud started? Will Lindsay be jealous that Ashlee gets to come to the MMVAs and perform?

Sum 41 have been on the road with their Go Chuck Yourself tour, but look out for their song "Noots" to appear on the Fantastic Four soundtrack. We think the Sums are kind of like the Fantastic Four: Deryck is like Mr. Fantastic cause his face gets all elastic when he sings. And then Steve-o is like the Human Torch cause his jokes are always on fire. Dave is The Thing because he's the rock that holds the group together with his solid guitar playing, and Cone is sort of like the Invisible Woman because he's the quiet, cute one.

Who knows what Ciara will bring to the table when she hits our stage, but we can bet that as soon as she starts dancing, everyone will be like, "ohhh!" Speaking of which, she wrote the song "Oh" as a tribute to her hometown of Atlanta, but she might just have to write a love song to Toronto after spending a night partying with the MMVAs!

According to NME, The Killers turned down a headlining spot at the Glastonbury festival because they felt that they weren't big enough to fill it! After Kylie Minogue dropped out of the top spot due to her recently diagnosed breast cancer, The Killers were offered to take her place. The band was just as satisfied to stay second on the bill, with drummer Ronnie saying, "we didn't think we were deserving of a headlining slot." Since we Canadians love us some Killers, they'll probably feel like headliners when they hit the MMVA stage!

Nominee Keshia Chante will be on hand to give out an award, but maybe she'll pick up one or two herself! Where would Keshia put her statue? She says that her mom set up two china cabinets for special accolades - and we're thinking that an MMVA is way cooler than like, whatever other 17-year-olds get. Oh sure, your bowling trophy is great, but come on! It's an MMVA!

Be honest. Months ago, did you know about The Arcade Fire? Hard core indie kids, put your hands down. Ok, now everybody else, this band just swooped up out of nowhere and took the world by storm. Like, how often does a band appear on the cover of Time? Best of all, supposedly, is their stage show, wherein members frequently switch instruments, sing in unison and act crazy. So just like their sudden rise in popularity, you might not know what hit you after The Arcade Fire unleash musical fury on Sunday.

Backstreet's back, all right? After a four year hiatus, the boys (maybe more like "men" now? Maybe "dudes"?) have returned with a new album called "Never Gone" and they'll hand out some hardware at the show. So what's up with the guys? Nick put out a solo album and broke up with Paris Hilton (or was it the other way around?), Kevin starred in Chicago on Broadway, AJ spent some time in rehab (he's now 2.5 years sober and enjoys smoking apple tobacco), Brian put out a Christian album and started a family, and Howie tried to go to space. Wait, that was Lance Bass.

K-OS is up for a stunning 8 awards this year, and he'll celebrate with what's sure to be a show-stopping performance. The renaissance man might be relatively new to some of you, but we betcha didn't know that he scored an MMVA in 1995 for best rap video! If he wins this year, it will the 10th anniversary of his first MuchMusic Video Award!
