The past year has brought you tons of great videos. Here's a quick rundown of the best of the best - those clips that we've nominated for Best Video at MMVA 04!

 |
Director: Sean Michael Turrell
Album: Billy Talent |
Synopsis:
An abandoned mental institution would seem like the perfect place for a jam, think the members of Billy Talent. That is until poltergeists aplenty come calling - doors open as shadows pass through them...cabinets swing crazily on their hinges...and the band seems to become increasingly unhinged themselves as the video wears on. Lead singer Ben is most affected, eyes bulging out of his head as he shrieks lyrics at the song's climax. They're insane, you know, and it's your fault.
Checklist:
- Let's see...a haunted loony bin, complete with tormented ghosts:
check
- And let's throw in a freakin' creepy doll coming to life and staring blankly at us as if preparing to kill:
yeah
- So...why the hell do people still insist on hangin out in abandoned asylums?:
You're going to DIE, people, ok? There's evil spirits and such. Stay away, alright? Doesn't take a genius.

Director: Glen Bennett
Album: Finger Eleven |
Synopsis:
This live-action Dali painting features F11 rockin' out...mildly...in this power ballad par excellence. It's a black & white FX extravaganza containing giant hourglasses, faceless businessmen, a conductor without an orchestra and singer Scott sitting on his throne on an unearthly beach in the midst of a sea of empty foldup chairs - metaphors, perhaps, for the unyielding passage of time and regrets of things unsaid or paths untaken.
Checklist:
- A conductor without an orchestra?:
Isn't it ironic? Doncha think? A little too ironic. Yeah I really do think.
- Woman surrounded by horde of candles clearly preparing their attack:
Aaaieee! It burns!
- Scott sitting on a throne:
Yes, we get it. What is it with lead singers, eh?

Director: Bryan Barber
Album: Folklore |
Synopsis:
Press clippings and personal photographs come to life for Nelly's multiethnic clarion call. She sings on a bustling street filled with people of all colours and creeds, a deserted beach complete with stylish sofa and rides a bike through a park, joined by colourful characters including a karate-kicking bumblebee and an Eastern European dance troupe.
Checklist:
- Fish with post-mortem throbbing eyeball syndrome:
Yep
- Traffic-defying bumblebee karate master:
Check
- And for all the humour, a cool, We Are The World-type vibe is still:
Present
Previous Wins:
2002 MuchMoreMusic Award: "On The Radio (Remember The Days)"

 |
Director: Maxime Giroux
Album: Caught By The Window |
Synopsis:
A remarkable combination of miniature work, stop-motion animation and live-action film. It's the story of a couple living in a decaying world, searching for each other without really knowing what they're looking for. The girl sets off across the landscape on a bike with a man in hot pursuit. She eventually finds an underground hideout next to the band's jam space and lies down to hibernate for the winter. The man finds her hideout, clears away the snow and wakes her up - and the video ends with the two lost souls together.
Checklist:
- Post-apocalyptic dinky cars:
Present. They're just like pre-apocalyptic dinky cars, except they're radioactive.
- Band member neglecting to save hibernating girl from certain death in airtight chamber:
Check. How can they be so cruel?
- Well, see, the song's called 'Into Your Hideout':
There's no suggestion they'll help you get out of it, now is there?

Director: Kyle Davison
Album: We Were Born In A Flame |
Synopsis:
It's Sam Roberts' song about life - and as a visual metaphor, he presents the sped-up growth of a tree from a seedling to fully-grown in mere seconds. Then seasons change, the sky morphs from ice blue to a honey brown and all the while Sam and his group of earnest troubadours rock it. Sam walks through space, past the moon, before the sun rises and sets behind him. This is all in aid of Sam's ultimate message: life is more of an unassumed road than a highway - it's not meant to be easy to travel on, but fighting through the pitfalls along the way is its own reward.
Checklist:
- Approximate diameter of tree, as seen in clip:
3 metres
- Approximate diameter of the sun, as seen in clip:
1,391,000 kilometres
- Approximate diameter of giant pile of hair (if sheared off Sam Roberts and band members): 2,862,001 kilometres
