+ MMVA 03: Class, Sass And A Whole Lotta Ass!
They don't call it Canada's biggest party for nothing! Last year's MMVAs were a blast, with a ton of glitz, glamour and gossip. It's been a while, so let's refresh your memory with some of the juicier bits from MMVA 2003!The crowd was jumping when Sean Paul kicked off the night with a rocked-out version of his dancehall hit 'Get Busy.' Unfortunately, he didn't bring his sexy dancers back onstage when he picked up the MMVA for 'Best International Video.' Maybe they were gettin' busy with fellow performer Ashanti's dancers backstage?
Forget all of the hardware Miss Avril Lavigne took home - let's talk about that ass! When reminded of her butt-cleavage blooper from the 2002 MMVAs, Avril went one further and mooned the cameras with the letters "MMVA' written on her cheeks. Later on in the show, Treble Charger's Greig Nori admitted that spying Avril's booty gave him "Happy Pants."
Speaking of ass, Ed The Sock confirmed that Mya is "like...Wo!" when she bumped into him in the middle of the party. The love for Mya didn't end there! During the show, host Rick Campanelli got down on one knee and asked her to make him the happiest man on earth by presenting the next award, she replied "On your knees like that, you could make me the happiest woman in the world." Wo!The boys from Simple Plan did some damage and totally kicked ass onstage. After smacking the crowd with a heavy-hitting version of 'I'd Do Anything,' guitarist David Desrosiers tore into the drum kit with a mic stand. When they rocked the stage to accept the MMVA for 'People's Choice: Favourite Canadian Group', singer Pierre Bouvier accidentally elbowed host Jennifer Hollett in the face. Hey Jenn, did you forget their album was called 'No Pads, No Helmets...Just Balls'?
SUM 41 pulled a pretty ballsy move, arriving late to the stage to present an award with host Amanda Walsh. Could they have been slowed down by all of the hotdogs and beer they were sucking back when they made their way down the red carpet earlier in the evening? And it looks like the SUMS are going to have to learn to share their refreshments. When Good Charlotte accepted the MMVA for People's Choice: Favourite International Group (the first award they had "ever won ever") they revealed their plans for new housemates: "We're moving to Canada - SUM 41 said we could live with them!"
On a high from being the most-nominated band of the evening, Our Lady Peace's Raine Maida got even higher when the band hit the stage. During the final verse of their hit 'Innocent,' the fearless frontman climbed up the side of the stage and sang high above the thousands gathered in the parking lot and on the streets around MuchMusic HQ. 50 Cent may have a song called 'High All The Time,' but we're guessing he was feeling low when he tried to claim Eminem's MMVA for 'People's Choice: Favourite International Artist.' When Em interrupted his pseudo-acceptance speech, 50 replied "But you win all the time. Why don't you let someone else win for once?"
And once the show was over the partying didn't stop! Rumour has it MMVA performer Michelle Branch rocked up to the after party with some of Avril Lavigne's band boi's.
Meanwhile, in a back corner of the club we dubbed "The Winners Lounge" MMVA trophy-takers were flying high. Members of the Sam Roberts Band, Our Lady Peace, Simple Plan and Swollen Members were surrounded by lovely ladies and a steady flow of drinks until the wee hours of the morning. The stars of the night had the luxury of sleeping in after the big party. For us, crawling back to MuchMusic HQ to work the next morning was anything but luxurious. But now that we've had a year to cure our hangovers, we're ready to do it all over again!
