Snowboarders' Day Off: Cold Weather Campin'

April 4th 2012 blog image

For #DoAwesome’s Caley Vanular, snowboarding is a way of life. But that doesn’t mean that riding is the only way to be amongst nature. Caley headed out with a bunch of friends from the industry and captured a night of camping.

In the meantime, the Mountain Dew® tour is still heading across the country, doing sick Burton demos and giving away a ton of Dew. The tour stops at Sun Peaks Resort this Thursday, April 5th until Sunday, April 8th.

Check out the schedule for details and to find an upcoming tour stop near you.

It’s April and the weather is all over the place up in Whistler: huge dumps of snow, high winds with a few golden sunny days. Sometimes you got to give your body a day off from snowboarding and enjoy the great outdoors the good ol’ camping way. This week I took it to Bowen Island to get my fix of flame cooked dinner and stories over the campfire and I’m not the only one... Snowboarders all over the place are headed to the woods to use their ‘off days’ to the fullest. Take a look at my top three essentials for cold weather campin’ and get out there..

1. Friends

Nothing like sitting around the campfire with some friends, talking shit’ and just living in the moment. Basic food, good conversation and that campfire smell that lingers for days..

Nike Filmer Joe Carlino, Burtons Mikey Rencz, Billabongs Eero Niemela and Capita’s Dustin Craven – Enjoy Some Beer n Hot Dogs on their day off.

2. Food.

Nitro’s Austin Smith Is down with dogs. If hot dogs aren’t your thing try a ‘Hobo Dinner’.

For a ‘Hobo Dinner’ all you need is: tinfoil, vegetables, protein, salt, pepper and sauce. Place over coals (not in flames) and double up the bottom layer of tinfoil to insure it doesn’t burn, check throughout to see how its cookin and once everything is heated up your as good as dinner.

3. Warmth.

Brands like The North Face, Poler Stuff and MEC are already down with warm sleeping bags and outdoors adventures. For clothing, you already have it all. Warm thermals, toques, waterproof jackets and gloves used for snowboarding can all be used for a good time in the woods. Extra rope and tarp is good to have on hand for some unpredictable weather as well as fire starter (will help if your fireword is wet).
